Technical Definition “Ergonomics is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data, and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance.” International Ergonomics Association
Our Definition – The science of creating an environment around us that is flexible & tailored to our needs to letting us work stress-free.
Why the need for Flexibility – Anatomically we are what we are, a product of thousands of years of human evolution. This can not be changed. So we need to create a flexible surrounding that accommodates and respects the human body’s structure.
Relevance of Ergonomics – Is it only our facial features, skin tone or hair which resemble our parents or ancestors? These similarities extend beyond the facial features and are equally prominent in our Musculoskeletal structure, which has evolved on account of several known and unknown factors over a long period. A process that continues with us also. It is because of these reasons some muscles in the body are stronger while some are tender. Some bones are long and strong, while some are small & delicate. All these variations in the body structure are for a reason and because of a purpose.
The science of ergonomics, with the aid of anthropometry, tries to study these variations and find solutions for mankind to work and live better. Work in a way that does not conflict with nature’s design of the human body.
Awareness is the key – A little bit of awareness and respect for nature’s creation of this human body will bring about a lot of difference in our lives that conform to the norms of ergonomics.
